Boy Scout Troop 96 has been an active part of Grayslake, Illinois for many years.
The current Troop was granted a charter from the Boy Scouts of America in September 1983. The chartered organization at that time was the St. Gilbert’s Parish Council. The St. Gilbert Knights of Columbus became the Troop’s sponsor in February 1990. We camp every month (except December) and are active in High Adventure, too. In recent years, the troop sent Scouts to the US National Jamboree in West Virgina and several contingents to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. We are proud of the hundreds of hours of community service work we perform each year and, of course, are especially proud of our more than 80 Eagles Scouts.

We have a great winter camping trip planned for this month! On Friday night, Feb 16, we’ll head north to Indian Mounds Scout Reservation near Oconomowoc, Wisconsin (just west of Milwaukee). Friday and Saturday nights, we will “camp” in a cabin. On Saturday, we’ll head a bit further north to Sunburst Ski Area for a day of skiing and snow tubing.
Your permission slip is due on Feb 12 along with your fees and waiver forms*, as follows:
Lift Ticket for Skiing or Snow boarding – $15.00 Ski equipment or Snowboard rental – $15.00 Helmet Rental – $5.00
Tubing (3 hour Session) – $22.00
Skiing lessons, what Sunburst calls a one-hour zone lesson, is $8.00.
* The forms for Skiing and Snowboarding should be available at the Feb 12 meeting.
This month, the troop returns to beautiful Rock Cut State Park near Rockford. The youth campground sits right on the lake making it a perfect spot for an “Anything That Floats” weekend.
This month, we head back to Wisconsin for a weekend of climbing and hiking at Devil’s Lake State Park. The troop will camp in nearby Mirror Lake State Park on Friday and Saturday.
Permission Slips are due on Sept 11, along with a waiver document (also available at the Troop Meeting). Scouts pay $15 cash to their patrol for two members of the patrol to do the grocery shopping for the campout.
Here are the permission slip(s) you’ll need for your son to go to Camp Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan this summer.
The troop provides transportation to and from camp for a very nominal fee (much less than the bus service offered by the Council). We encourage you to have your son ride with his fellow Scouts and to avoid “special arrangements.” You might image that it is very complex to get 40+ Scouts and 10-12 leaders to camp – even without special arrangements.
This month, we’re heading to the far Northwest (the far northwest of Lake County!). We’ll be going to beautiful Chain O’ Lakes State Park. We’ll be tent camping in the youth campgrounds. On Saturday, Scouts will have the choice of fishing, hiking or both.
April is a great month to go camping. Get your entire patrol together and head out for a fun weekend at a great state park.
Grab the PERMISSION SLIP and bring $15 cash to the Monday, April 17 troop meeting.
