In late February, the Boy Scouts of America officially released Signs, Signals and Codes merit badge, the BSA’s 135th current merit badge.  This is a pretty cool subject and you can start working on it now.  Here’s the link to the requirements.  Also, you want to read more about it here in this article from BSA.

Camping – April 2015

In April, the troop will be returning to one of our favorite camps and camping at one of our favorite campsites.  We’ll be in Coon Valley at Camp Oh-Da-Kot-Ta near Burlington, Wisconsin.  On Saturday, we’ll be going to Dan Patch Stables (just ten minutes away) for a guided trail ride.

Scouts are not required to participate in horseback riding in order to go camping, however, everyone will go to the stables and stay together.  Cost for the trail ride is $28/person (or $25/person if we have 10 or more riders).  All Scouts will be required to wear helmets (provided) and turn-in a signed parental waiver form.

The troop’s permission slip is due at the Troop Meeting on April 13 along with $15 cash for food.  We’ll also be collecting the waiver forms and the riding fees on the 13th.

Wanna go swimming?

It may still be cold outside, but we’re going swimming!  The troop will be heading to Hastings Lake YMCA in Lindenhurst on April 11 from 3-5 PM.  Scouts can work on Advancement, can take the BSA Swim Test (but still needs to be done again at MaKaJaWan), play and have fun!  Families are welcome, too.  Cost is $5 per person.  Lifeguards will be on duty, too!   (Check out the link to the flyer and sign up at a troop meeting.)  Oh, and thanks to Mrs. Blenniss for organizing this event.

Let’s Go Camping

We’re going camping. Next weekend (March 20-22) we’re heading to beautiful Camp Lakota near Woodstock.  Scouts who want to go camping need to have their permission slip and $15 cash for food at the troop meeting on Monday, March 16 (parents who wish to camp should also bring $15 cash, too).  Scouts should be ready to go on Friday evening in the the StG Parking Lot no later than 5:30 PM.  Use the Camping Checklist to get ready.

The weather seems to have broken, but it’s important to be ready.  Pack for winter and pray for spring!

March 2015 camping

The troop will be heading west to beautiful Camp Lakota near Woodstock for this month’s campout.

As we all know too well, March can be a Lion or a Lamb.  Since the weather in March can be so unpredictable (and winter-like), it is best to “Be Prepared.”  Please review and pack using the troop checklist, paying particular attention to bringing warm wicking clothes (no cotton).  It can be hard to pack for the weather when we are trying to do in inside our warm and dry homes!

The troop will gather on Friday, March 20 in the StG parking lot.  Plan to arrive NO later than 5:30 PM.  Be sure to have eaten dinner before you arrive.  All campers will enjoy a crackerbarrel after we set up our camp later in the evening.

Please download a copy of the permission slip.  This form and $15 cash are due NO LATER than the March 16 troop meeting (there can be no exceptions).

Parent’s Meeting on March 12

There will be a Parent’s Meeting on March 12th from 6 until 7:30 PM.  Although this meeting is designed to share our program with the parents of our newest Scouts, all parents are welcome to attend.  (Scouts ought not attend this session.)

The meeting will be held at the Grayslake Library in public meeting rooms.  Refreshments will be available.

We will have troop adult leadership speak to the parents about topics such as the Concept of a Boy-Run Troop, the Aims and Methods of Scouting, Activities, Troop Communications, and a more.  Of course, there will be time for your questions.  Experience has shown that this meeting helps our newest Scouts to succeed and accelerates them into full membership with the troop.  We hope you can join us for this informative night.
