David H recognized for Meritorious Service

At the January 2014 Court of Honor, David H received a Certificate of Meritorious Service from the Northeast Illinois Council.  He was recognized for “demonstrating an outstanding example of Scout skills” that ensured the well-being of a family member.  Last August, David responded calmly and effectively when his sister needed immediate care.  David came to her aid, alerted their parents, contacted Grayslake emergency services, treated her for shock and made her comfortable.  Well done, David.  Thanks for the reminder that we must always “Be Prepared” for anything that comes our way.  We’re proud of you and so glad you were ready when care was needed.

An Eagle Scout speaks to the troop…

Our troop celebrated the advancement to Eagle Scout of Nathan T last fall.  While every Eagle Scout Court of Honor is special, this one was noteworthy because the new Eagle took the time to think, write and deliver an address to those present, especially the younger Scouts in the room.  I asked him to share the speech so it could be on our website.  (Thanks, Nathan!)  Click READ MORE to read his speech.

Tent Stake Program

The PLC has voted to have each Scout purchase 5 stakes to be used to set up their tents.  In addition, the PLC decided that all Scouts would buy the same stake from the troop to be uniform.  Between 2 Scouts there will be 10 stakes to set up the tent.  This will prevent further damage to the “loops” and since each Scout owns their own there will be less chance of losing one and having it get caught in mowing equipment and injuring someone.  The new tent stakes have arrived and are available for purchase.  They are orange for high visibility and are quite robust.  Cost is $1 each – 5 for $5.  We will begin selling them to individuals starting Monday.  Adults may also buy stakes for the same price.  As an added incentive to keep the stakes in good shape, when a Scout leaves the troop he may re-sell the stakes back to the troop for half price if they are in good condition.

Eagle Scout explains how to be happy

17-year-old Eagle Scout Sam Berns was diagnosed with progeria, a rare and rapid aging disease, at the age of two. In this special talk recorded shortly before his death on Jan 10, 2014, Sam explains his philosophy on how to live a happy and fulfilling life.

If you have about 10 minutes to be inspired (and perhaps more appreciative of your own life), watch this video.  A Scout is Brave and A Scout is Cheerful.
