Q: What should my Scout pack to go to camp?

Here's a fairly complete list, but of course you should tailor it to meet your Scout's needs.

1. Medical form completed and signed by the physician (within 3 years) and signed by the parent/guardian (this year) and the unit leader – bring at least 2 copies. The Scout should also bring a medication form for any prescription medicines needed—these should be stored in the original prescription bottle with complete and accurate descriptions of directions for use.

2. Scout uniform: Summer uniform of Scout shorts, short sleeve button-down shirt, and socks recommended. T-shirts are good for daytime activities.

3. Sweater and/or jacket

4. Jeans and shorts

5. At least five pairs of socks. (Include some Scout socks for use with summer uniform.)

6. Neckerchief (required for flag ceremonies)

7. Towels (2) and washcloth

8. At least five changes of underwear

9. Swimming trunks

10. Pajamas

11. Sleeping bag

12. Ground cloth

13. Poncho or raincoat - A must!

14. Extra pair of shoes (for wet weather): A must!

15. Knapsack or duffel bag

16. Soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, and comb

17. Flashlight with extra batteries

18. Scout Handbook, pencil, pen, and paper (use pre-addressed, stamped envelopes/cards if you expect letters!)

19. Mosquito netting. A must for all campers!

20. Mosquito repellent (no aerosol cans) - A must!

21. (Sunscreen is also a good idea)

23. Water Bottles (At least one, but two are preferable.)

24. Spending money

 OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT…

1. Camera and film

2. Compass

3. Pocket knife (Sheath knives not allowed)

 WHAT NOT TO BRING…

Scouts should not bring Electronics, especially including cell phones, MP3 players and iPods and electronic games.  Also prohibited are fireworks, sheath knives, bicycles and pets. If you are unsure whether something is appropriate to take to camp, please ask. Please note Scouts do lose items and the outdoors can be rough on things meant to be inside—items of sentimental value and high-cost items are not recommended for camp use.

We encourage you to send mail to camp, but please limit your packages to one per week and consider items that can be shared with other Scouts, too.  Don't send too many snacks - they're in the wilderness and really don't need it!

KENTUCKY BIG TRIP! PDF Print E-mail

We will be leaving Grayslake on the morning of Thursday, August 7th and returning on Sunday, August 10th.  (Those dates are relatively early in the month because area school sessions now start as early as the following week.)  The trip includes camping three nights in a very nice family campground (yes, even heated showers) at Fort Knox, arranged by Scout parent and Army Colonel emeritus Tom Maus.

On Friday, August 8th, Tom is arranging a tour of facilities at Fort Knox, the home of the Army Calvary (tank and armored helicopter forces).  Facilities at Fort Knox include high-tech tank and helicopter training simulators, as well as maintenance facilities for tanks and helicopters, and many, many armored vehicles.  We'll also see the famous gold repository, although we won't get inside, as you would expect.

On Saturday, August 9th, we will be going to Mammoth Cave for the "Grand Avenue" tour, an excellent 4-1/2 hour, 4-mile tour that includes some of the best, most famous sights in the cave and an opportunity to eat lunch in one of the largest rooms in the cave.

Costs for the trip are expected to be approximately $15/tent for camping and $20/person for food (less for small siblings).  The group fees for the Grand Avenue tour at Mammoth Cave are $16/youth (ages 6-12) and $23/adult (ages 13+),  Other options for young children may be viewed at the Mammoth Cave National Park web site:  http://www.nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/cavetours.htm

Please contact Mr. Lewitzke, Mrs. Kaar or Mr. Klemens if you have any questions.

A Message from the SPL....by Ryan PDF Print E-mail
Hey guys, what's up?  It's Ryan. I just wanted to say everyone is doing an awsome job at everything.  We'll keep working and improving on a few of those skills and hopefully our troop will grow and become what Mr.Klemens says "the Best Troop In America." If I had to say anything about Troop 96 it would be that our troop -out of all the troops I've seen- in and out of our council and participated in that our troop has amazing team work, scout spirit and some of the greatest leaders in our council if not out of all of the US.  So ya, check out the web site, keep up the good work, and I'll see you on the next Monday.
